Chester Garden Club

Garden Club of Chester, New Jersey

Our Projects

Here is a list of the current activities or projects the Chester Garden Club does for the community:

Tubs-in-Town
Planter On Main Street

The tubs located on Main Street in Chester Borough are maintained by our club’s members who plant, fertilize, weed and water the plants regularly during the growing season. In winter, these planters are filled with the display of greenery and red ribbon bows

Chester Area Senior Housing Workshops

A series of workshops held at the Chester Area Senior Housing where residents have the opportunity to make decorative items such as floral arrangements or something for their home using natural materials. Afterwards, refreshments are served.

Evans Preserve

The club is working with the Chester Township Environmental Commission to identify native and introduced plants at Evans Preserve. The purpose of the project is to assess the impact of deer predation on native plant species.

Gazebo and Its Garden
Gazebo in Chester, NJ

The gazebo was built by the Chester Garden Club and given to the community. We maintain the structure and the surrounding garden. The club members weed, deadhead, and mulch the plantings around the gazebo.

Gardens of Distinction

Community beautification awards are presented by the club to local residents and businesses with visible landscapes or gardens.

Fall Chester Arts and Crafts Fair

This is our major fundraising event for the Chester Garden Club. Our booth is the gazebo, where we have baked goods, nature crafts, jams, vinegars, tea sandwiches for sale.  All the money raised at the fair goes back into the community.

Rockefeller Center Garden
 Rockefeller Center Garden

The Chester Garden Club design, planted and now maintains a cottage garden for this tiny historic building which was saved by the Chester Historical Society and moved to its present location on Main Street.

Arbor Day

The Garden Club plans a tree planting ceremony every year in our community. In addition to planting the trees in a municipal location, we have an Arbor Day celebration with the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and the governments of both Chester Borough and Chester Township participating.

Youth

Every year, we sponsor a Sunflower Contest for pupils in grades K-2 at Dickerson School. The children are given seeds at the end of a school year, and, in following September, we have a contest to see which one is the prettiest, funniest, tallest, cutest, etc.  An interactive garden-related program is presented at the Chester Science Fair. The club also cooperates with the Girl Scouts on selected projects during the year.  Bluebird boxes were placed at Chubb Park, and the Girl Scouts are monitoring and reporting on activity at the boxes. In addition, the club has a Raptor Trust Assembly for the children.

Library Exhibits
Library Exhibits

Every two months, the Chester Garden Club members create a new exhibit for the library to educate the community on horticultural and environmental issues. We have done exhibits on Chester farms, planting and maintaining a vegetable garden, canning, preserving your harvest and much more.

Chester Pride Day

The club participates in this project to clean up Chester Borough and Chester Township and improve our environment. This is a project coordinated by the Mayors coalition, a group of service organizations and churches. After cleaning the town, the fire department hosts a cook-out.

10,000 Daffodils
Daffodils at Chubb Park
